Sitting at nearly 8000' in the air, you can see for seemingly hundreds of miles from this unobstructed view. From near the top of Mauna Kea in Hawaii, on a clear night you can see the ocean, and then past the ocean to the stars. In this image, taken quite some time after sunset, the suns glow still defines the horizon. The bright object in the sky is actually the moon, at 1/10 its brightest luminance, but still able to cast shadows from the clouds onto the ocean below. Also in the image is Mars, the next brightest object. And in the valley we see evidence of humans, which some street lights and car headlights shining the way.
